Educational information only

BackyardBirdAtlas publishes general educational information about backyard birds. It is not a substitute for professional advice from wildlife rehabilitators, veterinarians, state wildlife agencies or other qualified experts.

Injured, sick or orphaned birds

We do not provide rescue or treatment instructions. If you find an injured, sick or orphaned bird, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or your state wildlife agency. The Animal Help Now directory can help you find wildlife help in the United States. Native birds are protected by law, and caring for them generally requires permits.

Bird identification

Identification guidance and the Backyard Bird ID Helper are learning aids. Accurate identification depends on several features together, and plumage, range and timing vary by age, sex, season and region. For uncertain identifications, consult an authoritative field guide or experienced local birders.

Feeding, water and yard projects

Follow local laws, homeowner rules and wildlife agency guidance, which may advise pausing feeding during disease outbreaks or in bear country. Use electrical equipment, cleaners and tools according to manufacturer instructions. You are responsible for safe use of any products.
