BackyardBirdAtlas ("we") respects your privacy. This policy explains what information this website handles and why.

Information you send us

If you use our contact form, we receive your name, email address, chosen topic and message. We use this only to read and, where appropriate, reply to you. Messages are emailed to our site mailbox and, if email delivery is unavailable, saved in a private folder on our server that is not publicly accessible. We do not sell or share contact messages, and we delete them when they are no longer needed.

Bird ID Helper

The Backyard Bird ID Helper runs entirely in your browser. Your selections are not sent to our server. The tool does not request your location and does not accept photo uploads. If you choose to save observation notes, they are stored only on your own device using your browser's local storage, and you can delete them with the reset button or by clearing your browser data.

Cookies

We do not use advertising or analytics cookies at this time. The contact form uses a short-lived session cookie only to protect the form against forged submissions (CSRF protection). If we add analytics or advertising in the future, we will update this policy and provide any required notices or choices before doing so.

Server logs

Like most websites, our hosting server and our network provider (Cloudflare) may automatically process technical data such as IP address, browser type and pages requested, for security, abuse prevention and reliability. We use this only to operate and protect the site. We also keep a short-term, hashed record of contact-form submissions to limit spam.

Children

This site is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your choices

You can ask us to delete a message you sent by emailing [email protected]. Depending on where you live in the United States, you may have additional rights under state privacy laws; contact us to make a request.
